Still No Government Action on Family First's Call For Ban On Internet Pornography (Media Release)

For more than six months Family First has been calling on the Government to ban internet pornography.

Family First has raised this issue with the Prime Minister’s office many times and is disappointed that we are still waiting for the Government to act.

This is a huge community concern. As parents, we want a safe internet environment for our kids, and the way to do that is to ban internet pornography, while allowing adults who want it, to 'opt in' and access it.

Parents feel powerless. We know we have to let our kids roam the Internet for study. Yet we can’t be watching over their shoulders all the time to monitor what they are seeing.

Last year, Family First sought technical advice about how a ban on internet pornography could work. We spoke to experts and discovered it was possible to block pornography at the Internet Service Provider (ISP) level.

As well as numerous meetings with the Prime Minister's Office, and the Prime Minister, urging him to adopt our policy, Family First has also met with Communications Minister Senator Helen Coonan.

Why is the Government taking so long to act? Either it agrees with our policy and will adopt it or it doesn't. We know action is possible. In May 2004 the Government published a report which revealed it would cost $45 million to establish a national system, and $33 million each year to operate.

Australian Democrats Fail to Pass a Single New Law in Two Decades in SA (media release)

In response to the latest press release by the Australian Democrats and Ralph Clarke claiming that the Family First Party is dangerous, Family First would like to agree with them! Family First is dangerous- dangerous for paedophiles and child molesters.

Within the first two years of the Hon. Andrew Evans MLC being elected to Parliament he introduced and successfully passed a law which removed the statues of limitations which prevented these terrible crimes from being prosecuted if they occurred prior to 1982. Since this legislation has been passed, around 1,000 accused sex offenders have been investigated with many in jail today as a result.

In stark contrast to this outstanding success for South Australian families the elected members of the Australian Democrats Mike Elliott (retired) and Kate Reynolds MLC have not managed to introduce and pass a single new law in the last twenty years! In the past two decades these two members of the Australian Democrats have failed miserably in their attempts to create law. The single task for which they were elected.

In short the South Australian Democrats may be considered to present the real danger to the South Australian public. A dangerous waste of tax payers money demonstrated by two decades of left wing rhetoric whilst achieving nothing in the way of legislative change.

The only danger in this election is that the Australian Democrats will be re-elected representing more left wing extremism and an absolute waste of tax payers funds.

Family First calls for Mandatory Reporting of Abuse in Aged Care (Media Release)

Media Release SF/43. Wednesday March 15, 2006
Family First calls on the Government to immediately introduce mandatory reporting of abuse of residents in all aged care homes across the country.

Family First wants the Government to establish an 'Aged Care Hotline' in each state so staff at aged care homes, as well as residents and other visitors, can confidentially report suspected cases of abuse.

Elderly residents of aged care homes are among the most vulnerable people in our community and Family First believes we should be doing everything we can to protect them and ensure they are safe.

The Australian community must have confidence in its aged care system and must have confidence that the Federal Government, which is responsible for our aged care system, is doing all it can to safeguard the welfare of residents.

Family First is also calling for more random spot checks of aged care homes.

There is little point having inspections when aged care homes receive prior warning and staff can prepare in advance.

For the community to have confidence that aged care homes are of the highest standard, the Federal Government must ensure there are more random spot checks.

This way we can get a true picture of what is going on inside aged care homes and whether care and safety standards are up to scratch.

Family First believes 'care' is the most important part of Australia's aged care system. It is the Government's job to ensure we have the best aged care system in the world and that all residents are treated with the dignity and respect they deserve.

Family First Condemns Telstra for Forcing Staff to Work on a Public Holiday (Media Release)

Media Release SF/42. Monday March 13, 2006
Family First condemns Telstra for forcing its Victorian staff to work on today's Labour Day public holiday.

In July last year Family First was the first party to raise the issue of the Government removing guaranteed public holidays, like Labour Day, Christmas Day, Good Friday and Anzac Day.

I am enjoying today's Labour Day public holiday with my family, like so many other Victorians. But Telstra workers have been robbed of a family day.

Public holidays are family days. That's why Family First campaigned so strongly last year to try to ensure public holidays were guaranteed. Unfortunately, the Government did not care.

Steve's video blog today is on Telstra's denial of a family day to their staff in Victoria.

Family First wants Qantas jobs kept in Australia

FAMILY FIRST WANTS QANTAS JOBS KEPT IN AUSTRALIA
Qantas should put people first when making decisions which will affect the futures of thousands of Australians.

Qantas does not need to move as many as 2500 maintenance jobs to China, Singapore or some other source of cheap labour.

Just last month Qantas announced a half year profit of $483.5 million for the six months to 31 December 2005. CEO Geoff Dixon was reported last year to have been paid over six million dollars in salary and bonuses.

Qantas cannot have it both ways.

On the one hand, Qantas wants us to prop up these huge profits by allowing them to keep Singapore Airlines out of flights between here and the United States, forgoing cheaper airfares.

On the other hand, they want us to stand by and let thousands of jobs go overseas so that their executives can maintain the lifestyles to which they have become accustomed.

Family First believes there is more to running a business than just making a profit. Companies have an obligation to the communities they serve – especially when the community has shown Qantas loyalty through their support for an Australian company.

This is a view clearly not shared by Qantas CEO Geoff Dixon, who last year made it clear that, despite a record profit, more sackings were necessary, adding that he made no apologies for looking after shareholders.

The community may be willing to effectively subsidise Qantas's substantial profit by keeping competitor Singapore Airlines out of the lucrative Australia to US routes. But we are not willing to do that if Qantas abandons Australian workers by shifting jobs overseas.
